BEIJING, China – A new checkpoint on a Chinese motorway leading to Beijing caused huge queues at the end of the National Day Golden Week holiday.
As many as 750 million people – half the population – were on the move over the holidays.
The whole of North China, including Beijing, was on smog-alert because of the sheer volume of people on the move.
China’s National Meteorological Centre issued a yellow alert for Beijing, Tianjin and the rest of the north of the country.
Other cities, including Harbin, Shenyang, Kunming, Changchun and Zhengzhou were also affected, have vowed to work to improve the problem of pollution.
The National Day Golden Week holiday is held to mark 66 years since the People’s Republic of China was established.
There have been fireworks displays around the country as well as special flag raising ceremonies, organized by the government.
